Action research: result of Thang K3A student about test on cucumber on Linh Moc farm
25/05/2014

The result of an experiment on Cucumber plants using two different manure formulas: (same weight of manure input)
Formula 1:  Buffalo manure
Formula 2: Chicken manure
The area of each formula was 5m2/formula.

Experiment on Cucumber plants using two different manure formulas
1. Growing and developing processes of cucumber plants

Fifteen days after cucumbers were planted Thang began to measure the height of the cucumbers. Then every two weeks, Thang measured the height to see the growth of cucumbers over time. Measurement continued until cucumbers stopped to grow in height (at the time of the last two measurements on the height of cucumbers were nearly the same).  Average height over periods on formulas was calculated and shows in chart one below.

Comments:
Average height of chicken manure formula was 44.65cm. The figure on buffalo manure formula was 38.56 cm.  Looking at the chart we see that the height of cucumbers on chicken manure formula was higher than on buffalo manure formula, by 6.08 cm. Thus, chicken manure was more suitable than buffalo manure for cucumber plants in the growth and development of height.

2. The growth of number of leaves on cucumbers

Comment:
On chicken manure formula there were 8.35 leaves on average, this figure is more than for those on buffalo manure formula by 1.23 leaves (6.78 leaves on buffalo manure formula on average). This also shows that chicken manure made the number of leaves on the cucumbers increased more than on buffalo manure.

3.  Cucumber yield obtained by the two formulas in number of cucumber fruits and weight
Both the formulas were productive, although the cucumbers were planted later than the normal scheduled time for this area. Thang did weigh and count the number of fruits when he harvested (chart three).
Chart three:  Cucumber yield obtained by the two formulas in number of cucumber fruits and weight

Comments: There were 12.8 kg of fruits on chicken manure formula compared with 5.2kg of fruits on buffalo manure formula. So the volume of fruits on chicken manure was 7.6kg more than on buffalo manure, although it was not so different in number of fruits between the two formulas, 23 fruits for chicken manure formula and 22 fruits for buffalo manure formula.

4 Conclusion
Through the process of monitoring, measuring and recording, illustrated on the charts above, it is shown that chicken manure formula is appropriate for cucumber plants in all aspects: from the process of growth and development to products. The farms in HEPA should developed chicken rising and have methods to collect chicken manure for planting vegetables, especially cucumber plants.
The experiment took place just in a small area. It should be done on a larger area to get a clearer result for applying on large scale.
